Benefits of US Citizenship

Becoming a U.S. citizen is the next logical step if you are a green card holder, especially if you intend to stay in the United States for the long term. U.S. citizenship provides many advantages not available to green cardholders.

The United States offers several ways for foreign nationals to live and work in the U.S. legally. Many immigrants who come to the United States plan to become citizens eventually. The path to citizenship is long and complicated, but it can be incredibly rewarding.

While becoming a lawful permanent resident has many practical benefits and advantages, the U.S. citizenship benefits that come with naturalization are far greater. For many permanent residents, citizenship is the natural next step after becoming a permanent resident. However, citizenship comes with responsibilities as well.

The Rights of a US Citizen after Naturalization

Obtaining United States citizenship means you cannot be deported to your home country of former citizenship or nationality. Naturalized citizens have just as much right as any other American to live and work in the United States.

You can travel with one of the most powerful passports in the world. A major benefit of U.S. citizenship is applying for a U.S. passport after receiving your Certificate of Naturalization. With a U.S. passport, you can travel to more than 180 destinations for short-term trips without a visa.

Once obtaining U.S. citizenship, you can obtain federal benefits available only to U.S. citizens. Upon naturalizing, you’ll gain full access to certain government benefits programs, such as federal college financial aid assistance available only to U.S. citizens.

Access to a Government Agency

There are many government agencies U.S. citizens have access to, including health care, life insurance, social security, and retirement benefits.

Government Agency refers to a unit of the National Government. This term includes regulatory agencies, chartered institutions, and government.

Examples of Government Agencies

The main US government agencies you may be familiar with include the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Education, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One other government agency includes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, but there are many more.

By gaining your citizenship rights, you gain access to the benefits and services from those listed above as well as access to federal employment and federal jobs, financial aid grants, and college scholarships after obtaining the U.S. citizenship government agencies require.

Family Members

U.S. citizens generally get priority when petitioning to bring family members permanently to this country.

Children

When you become a citizen, your children do too. Permanent resident children of U.S. citizens automatically receive citizenship when a parent naturalizes. Save them the pain of paying over $1,000 for a Certificate of Citizenship after they turn 18. Give them the full rights of citizenship now, including protection from deportation.

Children can’t apply for citizenship through naturalization. Instead, they automatically receive citizenship for free when a parent naturalizes, as long as they are under 18 and in the legal and physical custody of the U.S. citizen parent. If you have a child born abroad, that child may also inherit your U.S. citizenship status.

Other Relatives

You can also apply for a green card for more family members and relatives. You’ll begin having the ability to sponsor family members and will be able to sponsor your parents, adult children, and siblings for their green cards.

Your children automatically become U.S. citizens — even if they’re born abroad. You’ll need to report your child’s birth to a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Federal Elections

A person must obtain U.S. citizenship in order to register and vote.

A person who submits valid proof of citizenship with his or her voter registration form (regardless of the type of form submitted) is entitled to vote in all federal, state, county, and local elections in which he or she is eligible. The voter registration form, otherwise must be sufficiently complete.

A person is not required to submit proof of citizenship with the voter registration form. Still, failure to do so means the person will only be eligible to vote in federal elections (known as being a “federal only” voter). A “federal only” voter will become eligible to vote a “full ballot” in all federal, state, county, and local elections if he or she later provides valid proof of citizenship to the appropriate County Recorder’s office.

Once becoming a U.S. citizen, you can vote in any U.S. election. Non-citizens may only vote in some local elections, but only citizens can vote in federal elections.

Run for Elected Office

As a United States citizen, you can run for elected office and even become an elected official. U.S. citizenship is required for federal office and for most positions in public office at the state and local levels.

Citizenship and Immigration Services

Enjoying the benefits of U.S. citizenship require completing government forms. Suppose you have previously completed a green card renewal, applied for permanent residency, or worked with an immigration attorney. In that case, you’ll know that turning in your completed government forms directly and correctly filling out immigration paperwork can sometimes be difficult.

Immigration Law Firm

Working with a law firm for legal advice is one of the most helpful ways to pursue citizenship. If you have any criminal background or want access to a fair trial, many countries make obtaining citizenship near impossible. While an imperfect legal background may come with added legal fees, immigration services are here to help you obtain your U.S. citizenship.
